The Pitch

What we are doing?

Developing a web application to allow business people to quickly identify business intelligence derived from publicly available data sets to better inform business decisions related to start-ups, business expansion and business relocation decisions.

How we are doing it (tools and technolgies)

Team management

Utilising an Agile methodology to manage a multidisciplinary team, team members are assigned tasks each morning. Brief meetings are held every three hours to determine how each team member is tracking towards achieving their assigned tasks, to ensure all team members are across each part of the project, and to set new work and project direction as necessary to achieve scheduled milestones.

Software and techniques

  • Communications: Slack, dropbox, email, informal meetings and ad hoc

  • Technology: WordPress, Postgres, Cloud service for data storage, Python, Angular JS, Flask, SQL, QGIS, POSTGIS, prezi, wordpres, smart draw, Andriod

Data sets we are using

  1. Job Services Australia Data

  2. Higher Education Attrition Rates 2005-2013

  3. Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS): Correspondences, July 2011

  4. Survival of Businesses by Main State by Subdivision by Employment Size Ranges, June 2011 – June 2015

  5. Survival of Businesses by Main State by Subdivision by Turnover Size Ranges, June 2011 – June 2015

  6. Businesses by Main State by Industry Class by Employment Size Ranges, June 2014 and June 2015

  7. Businesses by Main State by Industry Class by Turnover Size Ranges, June 2014 and June 2015

  8. Characteristics of Temporary Skilled Migrants

  9. Business and non-business related personal insolvency statistics

  10. Characteristics of Businesses in Selected Growth Sectors, Australia, 2013-14

How we are using the data

Data sets are all being co-located in the cloud, with analytics being run to answer key business intelligence questions identified as being useful for two key target audiences:

  1. business looking to start-up or expand in new localities

  2. businesses looking to grow or or improve efficiencies in their current localities.

A web application is being developed that will allow businesses to:

  • characterise their existing business or proposed business by location and sector

  • identify trends and current statistics to answer key business information requirements, including:

    • local demograpics

    • local availability of skilled labour

    • local business environment (including competitive environment)

    • impediments common to business sectors

    • recommended marketing channels for by sector, target marker, and local demographics

  • display the information in an easily interpreted format for target audiences to best utilise it.
